Learning Through Connection: An Open Invitation to OTs and Life Care Planners

This blog is about sharing my experiences as an OT and Life Care Planner in the hopes that it will benefit others in some way. Maybe you are just starting out in the medical-legal sector. Or maybe you’ve been at it for a while. Whatever your situation, you can come here to read about what has worked for me — and what hasn’t. My hope is that it will be of some use to you.

Often, those of us completing assessments and reports for med-legal purposes work in isolation. Sometimes, we are lucky enough to have access to supervisors or mentors, but I’ve learned that, more often than not, this is the exception and not the rule. To minimize feelings of isolation, I work continuously on building my network of connections. I connect with other OTs and Life Care Planners not only as a way to feel less alone, but I’ve found it to be a great way to create mutual opportunities for learning. It’s wonderful to be able to consult with others to get a fresh perspective on challenging cases and I get a lot of joy from sharing my knowledge and expertise with others.

I’m well aware of how competitive it can be to work in this sector, but I’m not inclined to view my colleagues as competitors. I believe that there’s enough work out there for everyone and I’m much more interested in how we can we build each other up than keep each other down.

I invite you to return to this space from time to time to see if there is anything here for you that might add something meaningful to the work that you do. My intention is to share tips and resources about med-legal work through my OT lens and create more opportunities for us to learn from each other. Your comments and questions are always welcome.
